What impact will Brexit have on childcare in the UK?

With the UK successfully out of the European Union, what does this now mean for the childcare industry? This is the question parents and childcare workers alike have been asking themselves. While the details of the breakup are yet to be worked out, the potential restrictions of the free movement agreement have many within the industry worried what their future will hold. In an industry that relies heavily on EU nationals, questions are being asked as to what the Government plans to do to alleviate the potential depletion of childcare workers.

In terms of private childcare, finding childcare candidates that are EU nationals may become increasingly difficult. This is important to consider if you are looking to hire a childcare candidate that is bilingual and can teach your child a new language. Your search will potentially become more difficult as the demand for these languages, especially languages that are from EU countries, outgrows the supply of EU nationals that work within the childcare industry. This is where using an agency that has an extensive database of existing candidates as well as the time and resources to recruit new candidates becomes essential to ensuring your search remains a stress free and seamless process. The cost of childcare due to Brexit could also affect your childcare options.

How to plan childcare due to Brexit

A lack of private childcare workers forecasts that the demand will outgrow the supply, which will also cause an increase in their salary. However, if you are not able to fork out the extra pounds that come with the salary increases, there are a few options available to you that you might not have considered that will help bring down the Nanny salary due to Brexit. These are either a nanny share, part time nanny or an afterschool nanny.

An afterschool nanny will be able to care for your children in between them getting home from school and you getting home from work, meaning they will be working fewer hours than a full time nanny and have a lower annual salary. A part time nanny will work a few days per week, full time which is also an option if you are looking for childcare but not able to commit to someone full time.

A nanny share, on the other hand, will mean that you and another family share a Nanny and therefore share the costs of the nanny. Parents share nannies to give their children someone to play with, to give their nanny a pay rise, and to save on childcare costs. There isn’t a legal limit on the number of children a nanny can care for in a nanny share, but a nanny can only look after two families’ children at once. In practical terms, the key question is how many children the nanny feels they can look after. This will likely depend on the ages of the children, their temperament or needs, and the nanny’s experience. Nanny shares with two or three children in total are most common in this type of arrangement.

As an afterschool nanny and a part time nanny works on a part-time basis, they tend to be paid a higher hourly rate than a nanny that would work full-time. The market rate for a full-time live out Nanny is between £10 and £12 net per hour, whereas the market rate for an Afterschool Nanny is between £13 to £15 net per hour and the market rate for a part time nanny is between £12 and £14 net per hour. This is because they are working significantly less hours during the week than a full-time live out Nanny, so while it might look like you are paying more, over the duration of the week, you’re really paying a lot less.

It is a similar case for a nanny that is a part of a nanny share. A nanny share has a higher hourly rate than nannies that are working with single families. The hourly rate for a full time live out Nanny will depend on the amount of experience they have, qualifications they hold and any languages that they are able to speak. The typical hourly rate for a live out Nanny in London is currently between £11 and £13 net per hour. A nanny working in a nanny share will earn between £14 and £17 net per hour, however, this will be split by the two families. This would make the nanny’s salary between £7 and £8.50 net per hour for each family, which is considerably less than a nanny working for a single family.

As with all nanny placements, the family or families that are employing the nanny will be responsible for the nanny’s Tax and National Insurance contributions.
