Department of Education and EYFS Requirements

Being confident to give swift, critical first aid following a medical emergency is an extremely important skill and particularly vital for anyone caring for children within a home or nursery setting.

New legislation from the Department of Education (DofE) requires all newly qualified level two and three child carers to have either an emergency paediatric first aid (6 hours) or full paediatric first aid (12 hours) certificate. It remains a legal requirement for at least one person with a valid full 12-hour paediatric first aid certificate to be available at all times. This includes cover for sickness and annual leave and to accompany children on trips or excursions.

What is Covered in a Paediatric First Aid (PFA) Course for Nursery Practitioners

Children are curious about the world around them and will explore in many ways, from putting things in their mouth, to practicing newly acquired gross motor skills and the risks involved. To have the basic skills that a paediatric first aid (PFA) course for nursery practitioners can offer, will not only give the parents reassurance that you are capable of keeping their children safe, but will also improve your practice to be able to assess risks, provide a safe environment, and know exactly what to do in any emergency situation where first aid may be required.

This is why it is a compulsory requirement to have at least one person on site who has completed a 12 hour paediatric first aid (PFA) course and for all newly qualified nursery practitioners at a Level 2 and Level 3, to complete at least a 6 hour emergency first aid course. You will then need to regularly update all paediatric first aid (PFA) courses for your nursery practitioners every three years to keep on top of updated legislation and new frameworks to remain compliant with Ofsted, The Department of Education (DofE) and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

The Little Ones paediatric first aid (PFA) course for nurseries in London will be taken face-to-face at our Central London office in Kings Cross.

The emergency first aid and paediatric first aid courses both follow a set of basic skills needed to care for young children.

This includes to;

  • Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take

This skill is of utmost importance and will set the pace for the rest of the paediatric first aid (PFA) course for nurseries, by emphasising the importance of assessing each emergency situation that may arise during your employment within a nursery. It is from learning this procedure that you will then be able to use your skills to deal with any emergency.

You will learn how to;

  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby or child who is choking
  • Help a baby or child who is bleeding
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock)

To develop these skills, nursery practitioners are given plenty of opportunity to practice within our paediatric first aid (PFA) course and are made to feel comfortable and confident in all paediatric first aid (PFA) training given.

It is a legal requirement to have at least 1 nursery practitioner on site who has completed a full 12 hour Ofsted compliant paediatric first aid (PFA) course. In addition to the above criteria, they will also learn how to:

  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
